How to reduce the energy consumption of your home, its ICTs and save money?
From ITUwiki
Watts matter. Can you save a Kilowatt? If you can you will save 1200 Euros, and up to 5 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Improve the use of you electronic devices
- Activate the power management features on your computer and monitor: stand by or hibernation when not in use for short a period of time, and turn off when not in use. This can save 150 Watts.
- Unplug laptop, printer, scanner, and fax when not in use. This can save 20 Watts.
- Turn off (instead of using stand by mode) devices such as TV, DVD, video and stereo during night. This can save 20 Watts.
- Consider using a plug board that can be turned off when you're done using your electronics. For example there are plugs that when you switch off your PC, or put it in standby mode, shut down the power to the extensions as well.
- Replace malfunctioning electronic devices.
Monitor and control your home power consumption
- Check the level of loft insulation is up to local standards.
- A small monitor or power meter can show you how much electricity you use at home, how much it costs you, and how much harmful C02 emissions you are contributing to the environment, can reduce electricity consumption saving you up to 25% on your electricity bill while doing your bit for the environment. It can inform you via sms and email if there is any malfunction of your electronic devices. Is your freezer still working efficiently? Is the pump running almost continuously? A 20 year old freezer may now have degraded insulation and be adding an excess of 100 Watts.
- Temperature sensors can help to reduce unnecessary heating and cooling in your home.
- In winter, keep the settings low and wear thicker clothes even indoors. Do all rooms need to be heated? Turn off heating in rooms that are seldom used and close the doors. The saving can be up to 1-3 kilowatts per room during the winter.
- Do you run a boiler to store hot water for a home supply? Consider turning off the boiler and just heat the water when you need it (e.g. electric shower, electric kettle). The saving can be 100 Watts in the pilot light alone.
Recycle
- Reduce, reuse, and recycle office paper, newspapers, beverage containers, electronic equipment and batteries. This helps conserve energy, and reduces pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from resource extraction, manufacturing, and disposal. You can donate used equipment to schools or other organizations.
- Use two-sided printing and copying; buy supplies made with recycled content; and recycling used printer cartridges.
