Introduction.

One of the most common forms of privacy and CPNI protection in many jurisdictions are the strictures placed on the subsequent availability and use of information provided initially for the purpose of obtaining a service. These strictures may take the form of limits on the kind of information collected, retention lengths, protection of the information while it is retained, authentication of accessing parties, audit trails associated with access and use, and availability to third parties, including the associated terms and conditions. Legal and regulatory provisions include a mixture of industry practices, prohibitions, civil cause of action, and criminal culpability.
